A new 130-bed hotel could be coming to downtown Bury as plans come before the council

A new hotel could be built in Bury city center as part of plans to redevelop a major city center.

The 130-bed hotel is proposed for the former Bury Fire Station on The Rock, which was demolished last year.

The developer behind the plans is not yet known, although it is an established national chain.

Bury Council is expected to approve the sale of the property later this week.

Council chiefs say the site adjacent to The Rock Shopping Center “represents a significant development opportunity for the city.”

The firefighters left the aging station back in 2012 when they moved into a new, state-of-the-art facility in Chamberhall Business Park.

The building then fell into disrepair when vandals and intruders left their mark.

The site was later taken over by Bury Council, whose own planning department approved the demolition of the empty station in January 2014.

However, problems with anti-social behavior and arson at the train station, which opened in 1967, meant that the work was only completed last summer.

The council appointed Avison Young as its marketing agent for the site earlier this year and received 13 offers.

Proposals included housing developments, retail, auto sales, drive-through food and drink, and a gas station.

The offers have been evaluated and a report to be dealt with by the Council’s cabinet tomorrow (Wednesday 30 June) will recommend that the agency continue negotiations with the hotel developer.

Coun Eamonn O’Brien, Chairman of the Bury Council, said, “This will bring new private investment to the city center and create new jobs.

“It’s a real boost for the city as we recover from Covid.

“This is wasteland at a major gateway to the city center and a new hotel would help rebuild our night economy and boost our top visitor destinations like the East Lancashire Railway, The Met and Bury Market.

“We hope that the negotiations can proceed swiftly and can shortly make another announcement on the future of the site.”

He added: “The interest in the former fire station is a vote of confidence in the city center as an investment location. We also hope that we will soon be able to share positive news about potential newcomers to The Rock. “
