COLLEGE bosses highlighted the work of three of their students on the International Women in Engineering Day.
An annual awareness campaign to showcase the talents of young women engineers. Bury College has an increasing number of students on their books that match the description.
And this year’s theme amid the pandemic was Engineering Heroes and Their Efforts to Combat Climate Change.
Ellie Stokes, a level 3 engineering student, graduated from Tottington High School Academy and hopes to graduate in nuclear or aerospace engineering at some point.
She said, “I wanted to do an engineering degree because I wanted to do something challenging and new. The department feels very inclusive and I’ve made a lot of friends. My favorite part of the course is learning how to use the new software, including computer-aided design software. ”
Another former Tottington High alumni, Libby Smith, has acquired the skills needed for employment or further study in the future.
She said, “Studying an engineering degree at Bury College has helped me develop both my teamwork and independent learning skills.
“The tutors are all very supportive and good at explaining things.
“I either want to study civil engineering at the university or get a job in an engineering office and work my way up.”
And Lucy Farrell, a former Unsworth High student, has ambitions in civil engineering too, hoping to secure a higher level education in the sector.
She added, “I wanted to do engineering because I enjoyed building and construction technology at school and I wanted to do an internship like that.
“I really enjoy learning math as part of my course and have improved my computer skills so much. When I started at Bury College, I could barely save a file. ”
Christopher Mayoh, director of engineering for the college, said, “The students who choose to study have great ambition and all of the skills necessary to advance in the competitive engineering industry. The college strives to ensure that the gender of students does not affect their access to a course and that all students are given the skills and confidence to achieve their potential and advancement in the industry. ”
