Change.org petition against closure of Spurr House nursing home in Bury. started

A CAREGIVER at a care center slated to close by Bury Council has started a petition to fight the decision.

Spurr House, a short-term care center in Unsworth, is slated to close under a controversial council plan to save £ 13 million in Bury’s adult welfare budget.

Krisilia O’Neill, a nursing assistant at Spurr House, spoke out against the proposals earlier this month, saying it could save the council money in the short term but would cost more in the long term.

The Council held a consultation which found that the center should be closed due to government budget cuts.

The petition was launched by Krisilia and aims to reach 500 signatures so that it is likely to be included in recommendations and seen by more people.

Krisilia said: “I cannot believe that after a consultation and vote the council will not listen to the district and the people who will use these services.

“But I won’t give up until they realize the importance of adult social care, especially for people who may not be able to afford private care.

“This service is required”

Spurr House offers short-term care in which customers live for up to six weeks at a time, as a temporary break from their usual care location, to give caregivers or relatives a short break from care or because a person may need a short break from time to time. to recover from their illness.

Cllr Andrea Simpson, Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing, said, “This has been a really difficult decision, especially as it affects the staff at these facilities.

“However, these proposals do not reduce the service for the residents – they remove free capacity from the system.

“We as a community can no longer pay for unused capacity, especially when the type of care changes and many more people want and choose care in their own four walls.”
