Council confirms new investment in Bury Athletics Track

BURY Council has allocated £ 250,000 to renovate and improve the athletics track and facilities on Market Street in Bury.

According to the council, the money will enable the renewal of the synthetic running track as well as the long jump and pole vault areas. It will also upgrade the hammer and discus cage to meet the required standards.

In the long term, there are plans to improve a new health and wellness center, parking spaces suitable for the disabled, as well as access and security.

Cllr Andrea Simpson, Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing, said, “The Market Street route is well used. Each year, more than 3,000 people visit the website to participate in a wide variety of sports, health, fitness and leisure activities.

“In addition to local running clubs and schools, users include community groups and charities, from Wheels for All – a nationally recognized program for children and adults with disabilities – to Jigsaw, The Ark, Action for Children and Bury Blind and Partially Sighted Society rich.

“The Covid ban has shown how important physical activity is for so many people and how closely this is also related to mental well-being. We look forward to bringing these facilities up to date so they can attract even more residents to use for both pleasure and health. ”

The improvements will depend on funding from the Bury Athletics Club (BAC) and an investment from Sport England will be sought.

Bury Council currently owns the land and the goal is to transfer the site to BAC after the renovation is complete.
